Building houses for the earthquake victims in Yogyakarta

On May 27th, 2006 an earthquake of 5.9 on the Richter scale had a significant impact on the area surrounding Yogyakarta, Indonesia.  In an instant 5,744 people died and another 45,0000 were injured.  Over 350,000 houses have been destroyed with another 278,000 damaged.  The impact of the earthquake has left 1.5 million people homeless, which is three times the number of people affected after the 2004 tsunami that hit Banda Aceh.  The total damage and loss is expected to be at least $3.1 billion.  This area is considered to be the cultural center of Indonesia and previous to the earthquake, they were preparing to launch a new bid to bring tourism to the area.

Yogyakarta is starting on the long road of recovery and families are picking up the pieces trying to get their lives restarted.  Peduli Bangsa, a local NGO was on the ground in Yogyakarta two days after the earthquake, offering what assistance they could.  Peduli Bangsa is a small organization but they have been doing what they can with the limited resources they have.  They have been distributing and cooking food in a small community and they have also been working with the community by providing basic tools and trucks to help in the clearing of the rubble.   They have also started a free education center for the children in the community.

Now, Peduli Bangsa would like to start building houses for the earthquake victims once the rubble has cleared. Won’t you take a part in helping to rebuild this community?  You will have the opportunity to work on a house during our trip, providing hope and changing lives forever.

We expect all volunteers to pay for their own trips so that all donated money from Crisis Recovery International Foundation goes to help survivors recover. In addition, we requst that all volunteers donate a tax deductible $100 to the non profit Foundation which is used for the project on which the volunteers work. You can see your donation in action!
